課程概述

This course introduces students to fundamental strategies and techniques of English/Chinese and Chinese/English translation. Students learn the basic principles of translation and apply these principles to the translation of a variety of text genres. Students will also explore how a translator makes decisions in actual practice by considering a host of factors, including the author's intention, the desired function of the translated text as well as the needs of the readers.

課程目標
This course aims to equip students with the skills and techniques that are required to tackle practical issues in the translation of general and technical texts. Different strategies and approaches to translation and translation tools will be introduced. The students are expected to build their glossaries while acquiring substantial practical experience of translation.
課程要求
Students are expected to develop strong competencies in translation, fully comprehend the content and make necessary adjustments to align with the requirements of their assignments. Students are expected to incorporate translation technology tools (CAT tools and MT) while upholding integrity. It is the responsibility of the student to assess the integrity and impartiality of your submissions. If you provide minimum effort, you will get low grades.
Students may use generative AI models with acknowledgement. Please include a paragraph at the end of any assignment that uses AI explaining what you used the AI for and what prompts you used to get the results. This acknowledgement allows us to acknowledge the role of AI in the learning process and understand its impact on the work produced. Failure to do so is in violation of the academic honesty policies.
It is important to recognize that AI has inherent limitations, and human supervision is necessary to verify the quality and appropriateness of the output. Thus, exercising responsible AI usage requires human oversight and verification. By adhering to this AI policy, we aim to cultivate a learning environment where AI tools are utilized responsibly, ensuring the integrity of our work and promoting ethical AI practices throughout the course.
